Copy Desk Editor

The Copy Desk Editor is responsible for managing the copy desk and establishing and executing Monitor style in the organization’s print and digital products in a way that upholds the publication’s high standards of thoughtful, clear, accurate, and efficient communication.  You will uphold a high level of journalistic integrity and imbues the job with a deep sense of the Monitor’s values-driven and solutions-oriented approach to news.  The individual also has the perspective to watch Monitor journalism at a granular and objective level to ensure it maintains its century-old track record of excellence, while at the same time adapting to the evolving publishing landscape.

You will also excel at managing an assistant, clearly delineating responsibilities and working with a Deputy Copy Desk Editor and part-time assistants as needed.  You will also work effectively in a fast-moving atmosphere where deadline pressures can be intense.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Reads or delegates reading of Monitor Weekly and Monitor Daily stories in a timely manner.
  2. Checks for correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, taste, and Monitor style, and makes sure words are used correctly. Checks attributions if doubtful.
  3. In consultation with senior editors, makes policy decisions on foreign spellings.
  4. Copy edits online stories and marketing content as extensively as possible.
  5. Coordinates the work and staff of the copy desk.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education/Experience

Degrees and related experience required or preferred.

Knowledge/Skills

An advanced knowledge of linguistic usages and grammar. A clear understanding of the Monitor’s sensibilities and values. Full command of AP style.

Technology Skills

Uses K4 Edit for Adobe InCopy, eZ Publish, and Google Sheets/Docs, and has the flexibility to learn new productivity and messaging tools.

Work Environment

Must be onsite.

Engagement with Christian Science

Mother Church membership is desirable, but not required.

Newsroom editorial internships

The next internship application deadline is October 15, 2018. The Christian Science Monitor is seeking editorial interns with solid journalism skills to write and edit across the Monitor’s various print and online platforms. Applicants will be self-starters, have keen analytical skills, a basic understanding of world events, and an ability to write and edit with clarity and precision.

Duties will include pitching, reporting, and writing stories with angles that strive to bring understanding to divisive topics, show new innovative approaches to a wide range of problems, and highlight areas of progress.

A creative and deft approach and an attention to detail are all requisites. Interns will emerge from their experience as stronger writers able to discern and analyze trends in addition to earning valuable day-to-day experience working with top-notch editors in a dynamic newsroom.

Work Schedule: Paid and academic interns will work Monday through Friday, between 35 to 40 hours a week. Position is based in Boston, Mass.

  • Spring internships run from January through the beginning of May. Application deadline is October 15.
  • Summer internships run from the end of May through mid August. Application deadline is January 15.
  • Fall internships run from September through December. Application deadline is June 1.
